There are 2.3* million people under correctional control in the United States. By population, that's the third-largest city in the nation, but a city most of us know little about. That's why the Third City Project exists. By collecting and connecting data, we’re able to get a fuller view, a clearer understanding of the scale and magnitude of the issues. That's how we expose the injustices of carceral systems and set the stage for transformation and liberation.

OUR MISSION

Third City Project promotes the well-being of people and communities impacted by the criminal legal system by shining a light on health data behind the walls. We advocate for data transparency and ethical health care policies grounded in science.

*2.3 million is a point-in-time estimate that represents the constantly fluctuating United States population affected by various forms of correctional control, including federal & state prisons, local jails, youth confinement, involuntary commitment, parole, and probation. Exact, comprehensive data is not currently tracked by any one entity.
